Sniffing out the Brain’s Predictive Power: Human Brain ‘Smells’ What It Expects Rather Than What It Sniffs

Date:Oct 10, 2011

Summary (8-10 sentences)

Ever heard the saying,” stop and smell the roses.” Well scientist belive your brain gets ready to smell the roses before you. So the brain is giving a general exspectation of what the object is suppose to smell like. Having this ability is important because it gives humans the upperhand. It allows humas to react better to the enviroment that they’re in. the part of the brain in which this is located is the olfactory cortex. A scientist said it may not seem like we have an predictive feature, but humans over look the sense of smell. An example is if someone gives you a jug of milk and ask if it is rotten’ you could smell and know and you wouldn’t drink it so you wouldn’t get sick. the study was tested so that people who are deaf would be able to have another way of figuring things out.

What you found most interesting about the article and why (4-6 sentences)

What I found most interesting was we could predict a smell before we smell it. also we use are smell to keep us healthy. we overlook smell but it is really useful. it gives us a huge advantage.
